Dr Carmen Zammit discovered some wonderful truths about healing from cancer, about claiming your power and living life to the full. Although she died, those who were close to her could clearly see that she was "healed" in the deepest way.
Her video presentation for the Cancer Society traces her own experience from being hours or minutes from death from metastatic cancer to a full remission and three years of vibrant health during which she lived life to the fullest. It will be of vital interest to anyone diagnosed with a life threatening illness.
Her master's degree thesis THE ART OF HEALING on how art therapy helped Dr Maria Weekes, a psychiatrist with terminal cancer (multiple myeloma cancer of the bone marrow and blood of the most aggressive type) extend her life for 14 years is a work that will interest anyone interested in recovering from the wounds of a traumatic childhood and the role that creative artistic expression can play in the healing journey. At the outset she explores the distincintion between being cured and being healed.Carmen's PhD Thesis, THE EXPERIENCE OF DYING- completed during the additional three years that she lived, investigates Carmen's personal experience with widely metastasised cancer for which cure was no longer expected.
CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION outlines her intentions for the thesis
CHAPTER TWO: LITERATURE REVIEW critiques the dominant model of health care, biomedicine, and the complementary and alternative health systems, outlining their strengths and limitations with particular reference to cancer.
CHAPTER THREE: METHODOLOGY, METHODS AND PROCESSES shows the academic rigor with which her thesis was planned.
CHAPTER FOUR: MY REFLECTIVE TOPICAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY provides a first person scholarly account of personal experiences of cancer and dying which will be of immense help to who those who are living, or who have lived, the experience of illness and cancer, their carers and to doctors, nurses and other caring professionals working in the area.
A special feature of this work is the way Carmen, a trained artist and art therapist, illustrated the emotional part of her journey through her stunning artwork in PART B- ARTWORK AND STORIESBut Carmen's greatest teaching was in the inspirational way she lived her life- fully and courageously making the deepest impression on everyone who knew her. And this is where we are all indebted to her husband Michael Brooke for his intimate portrait of their life together and her death in his book ASCENT
Carmen died in February 2008. Her Phd was awarded poshumously by Southern Cross University in April 2009.
